Ian Beckett Professor of Military History
University of KentDescripción de la actividad
The First World War shaped the Twentieth Century and some of its legacies are still evident today, not least in the Middle East, but also in terms of popular culture and popular memory in former belligerent states. From the beginning, it was a global conflict by virtue of the automatic inclusion of European empires and their peoples but the war also spread to the Americas and the Far East. In belligerent states, the war had the capacity to affect every man, woman and child for a ‘total’ war waged on such a scale required that the enemy be out produced as well as outfought, and that all the resources of the state be brought to bear. While some states were able to adapt to the challenges of war, others succumbed to defeat and revolution. Even those states that remained neutral could not escape the impact of war.
As centenary commemorations continue, the course takes a global view of the causes, conduct, impact and consequences of the First World War, providing an overview of the most recent academic research for all those interested in war and its legacies.
