Descripción de la actividad

The II CEMFI School of Economics will address three key challenges currently facing our societies. First, we will explore issues raised by ageing, using evidence from SHARE and other longitudinal studies. We will study the impact of retirement on physical and cognitive health. Moreover, since informal caregiving is crucial to meet the growing demand for long-term care, we will analyze how it affects caregivers' labor supply, health, and social networks.

Second, we will review long-term trends in gender inequality, examining global disparities in economic and social outcomes between men and women, and tracing their historical origins. We will then examine possible strategies for addressing these inequalities, with a focus on social norms and how public policy can interact with or challenge them.

And third, we will examine the impact of immigration on labor market outcomes. We will discuss the impact of immigrant consumption and labor heterogeneity. We will link theory to empirical research, exploring how to properly measure labor outcomes and obtain identification through plausibly exogenous sources of variation.

The program is organized around these themes, with two morning lectures dedicated to each of them. In the afternoon there will be student presentations and a tutorial session on careers in Economics.

The School is aimed at final year undergraduates and graduate students in Economics. Depending on the availability of places, students may be invited to attend the 4th Banco de España-CEMFI-UIMP Conference on the Spanish Economy, on “Immigration and Industrial Policy: Challenges and Opportunities for Spain”, 3-4 July 2025.
